VOTERS in Warrington have backed the decision to leave the EU on the day Britain decided to exit the union.

Almost 54 per cent of people in the borough have backed the Leave campaign in a result announced around 4.45am in Birchwood.

Leave polled 62,487 votes compared to 52,657 votes for Remain.

More than 73 per cent of people voted - up on the north west average.

Since the national result was declared, with a 52 per cent win for Leave, the pound suffered its biggest drop since the 1980s.

Chairman of UKIP's Warrington branch Trevor Nicholls said people were angry and wanted change.

He said: “I have really been at this for four months – it has been brilliant.

“We have had a really good connection with people on the streets.

“The campaigning from the Remain side has been nasty. There is no more ‘project fear’ with us than there is in the Remain camp.

“I think David Cameron really underestimated this. People are angry and want change."

Lib Dem councillor Ian Marks reflected on the result which he said could put people in 'great difficulty'.

He said: “Overall we are extremely disappointed.

“We think it will be very difficult now. I believe it could put the UK in turmoil and great difficulty.”
