WARRINGTON primary schools have come up trumps after two pupils from the town are bidding to become the national Top Trumps Champion this weekend.

Jack Cooper, 10, from St Margaret’s Primary School and Toby Hatto, 11, from Grappenhall Heys Primary School, beat more than 125,000 youngsters to get to the tournament final.

The youngsters are now hoping to dazzle the audience with facts about space in the final at Birmingham Science Museum on Saturday, when a group of 12 elite Top Trumps players compete for the title.

Toby, who is due to start at Bridgewater High School in September, said: “I absolutely love Top Trumps.

“It is such a brilliant game. I can’t believe I am in the Grand Finals! I hope I will make my family and my school proud.”

Mum Siobhan, 39, said: “He was very dedicated to getting through the competition and now he’s just so excited to be in the final. All his friends have been practicing with him.

“He likes memorising facts and his favourite pack is The Wonders of the World. He’s learning a lot – it’s good for all of us because he tells us new facts.”

It is the first time a pupil from Grappenhall Heys Primary School has made it to the final of the competition and Toby will be cheered on by his biggest fan, his four-year-old brother, William.

Chris Bounds, teacher at Grappenhall Heys Primary School, said: “We’re all so proud that Toby is going to be in the Grand Final.

“Hundreds of our pupils have taken part in the Top Trumps Tournament over the last seven years. We run it during lunchtimes and it is always very popular.”

A pupil from St Margaret’s Primary School in Orford won the competition in 2014.

Toby’s friends have been helping him prepare for the competition and mum Siobhan said that they have been playing as many practice games as possible ahead of the space-themed finale.

This year more than 2,500 schools have taken part in the National Schools Top Trumps Tournament, which challenges youngsters between the ages of six and 11 to remember facts and stats from different topics.

The winner will take home a gleaming trophy, iPad and Top Trumps goodies.

Organiser Claire Simon from Winning Moves UK said: “Top Trumps is fun, camouflaged learning and schools embrace lots of our packs as a ‘teaching tool’.

“Congratulations to Warrington – producing two of the 12 Grand Finalists from a starting line-up of 125,000 across the UK is quite some achievement. Added to the fact that Warrington has previously had a champ it’s quite something.

“We wish Warrington all the very best in this weekend’s Grand Finals!”
