PICTURE the scene. You have made it through the glittering golden gates embossed with Mickey Mouse's head and had your first glimpse of Sleeping Beauty's pink and blue turreted castle.

Surely there can't be many adults brought up on a diet of Disney films that wouldn't get a little rush of excitement at this sight?

That was the feeling my sister and I had walking (or perhaps closer to a skip) down Main Street USA as we set out to discover whether two adults could have as much fun as the youngsters in the 'Happiest place on Earth'.

Here's how to justify taking your inner-child for a day out.

1. The thrill rides aren't for the faint-hearted

While some may think Disneyland Paris is all about gentle boat trips while 'It's a Small World' plays, you would be greatly mistaken.

Day tickets get you into both the Disneyland Park and the Walt Disney Studios Park with a choice of five white-knuckle thrill rides.

Sadly for us two of them were closed for refurbishment during our visit.

But the twists and loop-the-loops on board Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril, hurtling along a 36-metre high cannon on Space Mountain and dropping 13 stories on The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror filled our quota of shriek-filled fun.

And while you wouldn't really class it as a 'thrill ride' we also loved '4D' ride Ratatouille: The Adventure where visitors feel like they have been shrunk down to the size of a mouse and chased through the sights, sounds and smells of Gusteau's Parisian restaurant.

2. It's a decent work out

With the Disneyland park open from 9am to 11pm it's a long day for little ones and after getting up at 4am for our flight to Paris, we were soon flagging too.

While none of the rides are particularly far apart, you'll easily clock up your 10,000 steps flitting between both parks and taking in every corner to avoid missing any of the Disney magic.

Fortunately there were plenty of places selling Snow White-style red toffee apples to boost our energy levels.

3. Only adults will appreciate all the 'Disneyfied' touches

From feeling like you have been shrunk down to the size of a toy wandering through the Toy Story-themed Playland area to being transported to the setting for Ratatouille complete with rat-topped fountain, it's the attention to Disney detail that makes this place special.

And there's nothing like the feeling of defeating the Evil Emperor Zurg during the Toy Story-inspired ride Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast.

4. Firework displays will never be the same

Set to a medley of songs from favourite films, the 'Disney Dreams' show closes the park each night with an explosion of light, colour and fireworks.

Scenes from much-loved movies are projected on to the castle to coincide with an incredible laser show and some fantastic fountain action for a pretty spectacular finale.

5. It's a tick on the bucket list

Anyone that drowned out the Genie singing along with Aladdin when they still needed a booster seat at the cinema or couldn't get to sleep without their cuddly Mickey or Minnie will know that grinning for a selfie in front of Sleeping Beauty's castle with a big pair of fluffy mouse ears on your head is an absolute must-do.

And while we may have eventually ditched the mouse ears idea (we were supposed to be in Paris for the Euros after all) we probably took more pictures with Disney's tallest building than we did with the French capital's other iconic tower.

All in all, no matter what age you enter Disneyland Paris - you're pretty much guaranteed to be skipping out like a five-year-old.
