A DETERMINED young girl from Dewsbury walked 60 miles from Headingley to The Halliwell Jones stadium ahead of the match against Rhinos on Friday to raise money for the Warrington Wolves Foundation.

Nine-year-old Megan Rodd is a Leeds Rhinos fan but her five-year-old brother, Kayden, who has autism, became a devoted Wolves fan after falling ill at a Magic Weekend match in 2014.

Mum Michelle is a Rhinos season ticket holder but said the Warrington Wolves were so kind to Kayden that he switched allegiances.

Last week Kayden’s big sister, Megan, chose to fundraise for the Warrington Wolves Foundation to say thank you by walking from Headingley to The Halliwell Jones Stadium in just five days.

Michelle, 36, said: “The club and the foundation have been outstanding, they have been very kind to us.

“Megan wants to give them something back – she said she’s never seen Kayden smile so much as he does when he watches Warrington Wolves play.”

Michelle said she had initially planned to do the walk during half term but discovered that Megan was actually still in school last week.

Megan insisted that they still complete the challenge so she travelled to the start point every day with her mum after school to cover around 15 miles, which took about five hours.

Michelle said: “It’s alright for her, she’s full of energy, but I’m the one who has got to do these things with her! Sometimes I’m thinking, what’s next?

“Every time the challenges just get bigger and bigger. My feet hurt and I’ve got blisters everywhere but she keeps me going.

“She’s just superhuman and she never moans.”

Megan wants to be an athlete when she grows up and has been fundraising since the age of six, when she climbed Ben Nevis for charity.

She also won a Child of Courage award in 2013 but Michelle said: “She really doesn’t like the attention, when she was on the front of the Yorkshire Post after winning the award she went and turned over all the newspapers in the shop.”

Megan has raised more than £1,300 for the Teenage Cancer Trust and Warrington Wolves Foundation so far and she completed her challenge by presenting the match ball on Friday night.

She was joined by Kayden and her mum for the final stretch of the walk down Winwick Road ahead of the match and Michelle was full of praise for the town.

She said: “The fans and the people of Warrington are just wonderful, we have made some lovely friends here and they all encourage Kayden.

“I have never known a town that’s so close and the fans welcome us at every match.”
