A NEW extension can be built at the King's Head pub.

Councillors meeting in the Town Hall on Thursday night agreed the scheme for the Winwick Street pub.

The King’s Head extension has been at the centre of a long-running planning saga which began when a conservatory, affectionately known as the shed by punters, was added to the grade II listed building without permission.

Regulars started a Save Our Shed campaign with an online petition and the battle was even covered in a Channel 4 documentary.

Temporary planning permission for the extension was originally granted until October last year before being extended to July this year in order to allow time for proposals for a more in-keeping development to be drawn up.

This application will see the removal of the existing UPVC conservatory and demolition of a boundary wall to make way for a new brick extension.

Work on the building, which was listed in 1975, is expected to begin following the finish of the 2016 Super League season.

Landlord Andrew Fannon has worked with Warrington Borough Council to plan the extension, which he says would make the King’s Head the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the Stadium Quarter redevelopment.
