A CARE home in Burtonwood will continue to provide services for its users following a stabbing inside the facility where a woman was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Debra Wareing, care centre manager at St Mary’s on Penny Lane, has released a statement after a 68-year-old woman living at the centre needed urgent medical treatment for multiple stab wounds to her body.

She said: "We can confirm an incident occurred on May 18.

"Staff immediately responded to avoid serious harm following an assault by a visitor.

"All care was and continues to be provided for the service users.

"A police investigation is under way and we will not be commenting further at this stage."

Police were called to St Mary's care home following reports of the attack shortly before 1pm on Wednesday.

A 66-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the 68-year-old care home resident was stabbed multiple times in the back, neck and face.

The suspect from Blackpool was arrested at the scene but has since been detained in hospital under the Mental Health Act.

It is understood the woman will be held for up to 28 days while assessments are carried out into her mental health.

While the injuries sustained are believed to be serious, police say the victim is recovering after she was rushed to Aintree Hospital.

The bravery of one of the care workers was also praised by police after they ran to the aid of the victim.

The home provides care and support for those with dementia, brain injury, physical disability and mental health problems.
