A MAJOR price hike for the removal of green bin waste could come into force later this year, the Warrington Guardian understands.

While the plans to introduce a £30 charge for the service have not been confirmed, the proposed changes are expected to be discussed by the council's executive board later this year.

A council source told the Warrington Guardian: "The plans have not been set in stone but the changes have been under consideration for a while.

"I expect the matter to come before the council executive board before the autumn."

As cuts continue to bite, Cllr Judith Guthrie, executive board member for environment, said the council is always searching to find ways to make savings to cope with shrinking budgets.

She said: “The council is having to look to greater levels of savings and/or additional income due to the levels of cuts being imposed upon it.

“So, in this context, you will understand that all options have and are constantly being considered. However, in this case, no decision has been made by the executive board.”

The green bins are currently collected on a fortnightly basis and there is no extra charge for this service.

But a spokesman for the Warrington and Halton Green Party said they are 'strongly opposed to alleged plans to push the costs of green bins onto householders'.

He added: "If anything, Warrington Borough Council needs to do more to encourage recycling.

"Our town is lagging behind in the north west by failing to provide adequate means for recycling food waste.

"Charging for green bins will only discourage people from recycling.

"At a time when the council has increased the amount of council tax rate, it would be unfair to demand even more of the people of Warrington."
