DURING May our Humans of Warrington feature will focus on the people within the community who make a real difference to the town where we live through their volunteer work.

Name: Gail Pattullo

Age: 66

Location: Great Sankey

Volunteer work: Former church warden at St Mary's Church

"I have been a church warden at St Mary's for six years and, during that time, I have been honoured to hear the remarkable stories of so many people who have passed through the church.

"I have helped with both weddings and funerals and one of the most rewarding parts is hearing the stories of people's lives.

"Many have such interesting stories to share and it is an honour to be able to listen to them.

"At funerals, it can be sad but – for those who have lived a long life – it can be a celebration of what they have achieved.

"Even though some are strangers as they have not been into the church before, it is rewarding to hear families share these stories and celebrate their lives.

"Volunteering as a church warden has also helped me to meet new people – particularly through the community lunch where a group of us provide the food and ask for a donation in return.

"We have had up to 60 people at the lunch and people have started to attend the church through this.

"It is a bit like a job - but one that I have enjoyed."
