ANGRY residents believe the council is prioritising the £181,000 Brickfield Park regeneration over fly-tipping issues blighting streets nearby.

Councillors are confident the project, which is set to be delivered at the site off Orford Lane by the end of summer, will provide a 'major boost' to the area.

But 'fed up' residents remain concerned over the ongoing battle against litter louts.

One of them, who wishes to remain anonymous, said the council is 'not doing enough' and hopes extra funding will be directed towards tacking the problem to win the war against fly-tipping.

She added: "The council is spending money on the park and the surrounding area is becoming a rubbish tip. Surely this area should be a priority."

Forster Street and Cyril Street were among the roads hit hardest this month but the authority responded to clear waste, including sofas and bin bags, this week.

The council said it is 'always a shame to see good work being undone by inconsiderate' individuals.

A spokesman added: "It is deeply concerning that so much money and energy goes into removing illegally dumped waste especially when it could go towards improving our environment and the quality of life for the majority.

"The community were very much part of the story of the Brickfield Park improvements and we hope those same residents can come forward with information about the fly-tippers.

"Wherever appropriate CCTV will be considered as an option to identify those fly-tipping in our borough, however, the most effective way to tackle residential fly-tipping is for residents in those communities blighted by it to act as our eyes and ears."

The council will be funding £131,000 towards the park's transformation, with £50,000 obtained through a grant from Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd.
