AN organisation dedicated to supporting former mining communities is inviting groups in Warrington to apply for a share of £500,000 funding.

The Coalfields Regeneration Trust has launched the appeal, which is targeted at those encouraging and supporting residents into work, through its community investment programme.

The latest round of applications is open to organisations that work with individuals to enhance their employability prospects on the way to helping them secure a job or apprenticeship.

The programme will provide groups able to demonstrate how investment would be used to 'impact positively on employment levels in their area' with up to £10,000 per application.

Head of operations for the Coalfields Regeneration Trust Andy Lock said: "With 14 per cent of adults in the coalfields out of work on benefits and only 50 jobs for every 100 adults of working age it is essential that we show our support for organisations that are tackling these issue head on.

"Following the launch of a three-year strategy, which focuses specifically on employment as one of three key areas, we will work with partners to develop the skills of those living in the communities and support activities that improve the employability of people.

"Through this strategy and our targeted and responsive programmes, including the community investment programme, we know that we can make a lasting and positive impact."

The trust was launched in 1999 but since then more than two million members of the public have benefited from support delivered by the organisation.

A total of 25,342 people have been supported into work, 5,375 jobs created or safeguarded, more than 1.3 million people have improved skills and qualifications, while 225,452 people have participated in activities that have improved health.

The charitable company and social enterprise has teams deployed across England, Scotland and Wales.

The deadline for applications is June 10.
