THE glory days look set to return to a former rugby field in Appleton – more than 12 years after it was abandoned.

Warrington RUFC previously played their home fixtures at the ground, on Bridge Lane, but the state of the site has deteriorated dramatically since the side moved to Walton.

But while the 'neglected' pitch has become overgrown and blighted with dog mess, concerns have mounted over the possibility of development taking shape on the land.

The club has continued to lease the field from the council for £15 a year under terms dating back to 1959, with claims suggesting the hierarchy have been waiting to 'cash in' on planning proposals.

But chairman Richard Woodward confirmed the team will be returning to Appleton within months.

He said: "We are in the process of returning the field to use and have been given a quote for the work.

"It will return to use by September. Training and matches will take place here and we will be refurbishing the floodlights too."

The clean-up and renovation operation is set to total £15,000 but Mr Woodward is confident the work will be justified.

Appleton Liberal Democrat councillors have continued to raise the issue and have highlighted residents concerns in recent years.

Cllr Brian Axcell said he is 'pleased' the field is set to be tidied up and called for the weeds surrounding the site, as well as paths nearby, to be tackled immediately.

And Cllr Judith Wheeler also welcomed the latest developments.

She said: "If this is the case then of course we are delighted to see the field being brought back into use as a recreational area.

"The unkempt state of the field has been a blight on the area for many years and especially for those residents who back onto it.

"We have four shops that we hope will all benefit from increased activity in the area and improvements to the environment.

"We have always had grave concerns about housing on the field. It is an area of open and recreational space and should be maintained as such.

"If there were to be any development, it should be for community use but we would still want some open recreational space.

"However, our main concerns about housing – unless it was sheltered or supported housing – would be the impact of traffic on Bridge Lane and Lumb Brook Road which are already at breaking point at certain times of the day.

"Any future developments on the site would be guided by the views of the residents of Cobbs and with full consultation.

"We do wish the rugby club would engage with councillors and the parish council. We are always open to discussion and the sharing of ideas."

The council confirmed under the terms of the lease the club is 'expected' to maintain the field.

A spokesman added: "We have received no requests for assistance."
