AN Appleton man helped raise £25,000 for charity after braving scorching conditions to complete a 156-mile run across the Sahara desert.

Stuart Livingstone, 43, completed the Marathon des Sables in aid of the Screwfix Foundation, which supports projects that fix, repair, maintain and improve properties and facilities for those in need.

Donations given to the Screwfix employee for his efforts reached £12,500 but were matched by the home improvement firm, bringing the total to £25,000.

Stuart described the feat, which was equivalent to almost six marathons, as an 'epic and brutal experience'.

He added: "Thanks to the patience and support of my wife, the generosity of Screwfix suppliers and kind donations from family, friends and businesses.

"It's hugely satisfying that this adventure has managed to raise £25,000 for a brilliant charity, the Screwfix Foundation, helping those less privileged than myself."

Foundation trustee John Mewett was full of praise for Stuart following the inspirational achievement.

He said: "The Screwfix Foundation relies on the money raised by fundraising events across the country in and around our Screwfix stores.

"We're delighted that Stuart has completed this gruelling challenge which has raised £25,000 for the foundation."

Stuart followed a 'rigorous' training programme over the past two years to prepare himself for the event.

And he admits he was 'humbled' by the messages of support and vital donations.

The foundation, which was launched in April 2013, puts money towards a variety of projects, from repairing buildings and improving community facilities for those in need in the UK, to renovating homes of people living with sickness or disability.
