THE heartbroken families of the Viola Beach band members and their manager Craig Tarry have said it would have been the group's dream to top the charts.

The song Swings and Waterslides entered the Official Chart Top 40 at number 39 on Monday but the latest update today, Wednesday, is the song on course to be in the top 10.

Speaking to the Warrington Guardian, the families of band members Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe and Jack Dakin and manager Craig Tarry are now calling on Warrington to help them get the up-and-coming indie pop four-piece to number one.

River's dad Ben Dunne, 48, said: “At first we did not know whether to talk to the press but then we thought if the boys were up there looking down on us they would be going ‘Why are you even thinking about not doing it. Are you mad?’

“It’s our last chance to do this for them.

"They were going to have a number one and it does not seem right that they don’t get it because of this accident.

“They were set to be really successful for all the right reasons and it has been cut tragically short.

“The way the families feel, and I hope this does not sound cheesy, but it is as if they are saying 'Over to you Warrington. Finish the journey for us'.

"We don’t want to let them down now.”

Jack’s mum Joanne added a chart position later this week would be 'something really special' to them.

She said: “They were so thrilled to be working with such talented musicians that they thought they had broken through.

“But they can’t go on anymore and it would be a really fitting tribute to them because it means people have listened and realise how good the music was.”

Musicians including Liam Gallagher, Kasabian and The Stone Roses have backed the campaign to get the Warrington indie pop four-piece in the charts tweeting links to the track.

Frontman Kris’s mum Lisa said she was 'amazed' when she heard Swings and Waterslides.

She added: “It would mean a lot to me if it topped the charts because that was his dream and I supported him throughout.

“It would just be fantastic for all of them if it got to number one.”

Lisa’s partner Damian added: “He was so eager for us to listen to Swings and Waterslides and when I first heard it I thought: ‘This should be in the charts’.

“It’s brilliant that all these stars are helping to push it up the charts again. It should be able to go up itself, it’s that good.”

Mum Ruth Lowe added a chart success would be a 'fabulous tribute'.

She added: "They all worked so hard with their music and the travelling.”

Tom’s sister Rebecca added: “The fact that they have come so far in such a short space of time shows how much talent and potential they had. It would be amazing for them to achieve their dreams.”

Sister Sarah Tarry, 30, said: “It will mean a lot to us but it would mean more to Craig and the band.

“The band was everything to him.

"We were looking on his Facebook and he was always talking about them and asking people to listen to their music.

“I’m sure they are up there having the best time of their lives and we want to give them more reasons to celebrate.”

The Warrington Guardian called for readers' help on Sunday to get the band in the charts with hundreds of people commenting on our Facebook and Twitter feed they had done their bit to support the campaign.

The cut-off point for this week’s chart is midnight on Thursday.

Swings and Waterslides’ final position will be confirmed on Friday on The Official Chart on BBC Radio 1.
