GREAT Sankey Parish Council is proposing to tackle the problem of speeding on Lingley Road and Park Road by planting a hedge on Lingley Green.

The council have said that the hedge would reduce vehicle speeds by obscuring vision at the junction between the roads and would also improve the look of the green.

Cllr Dan Price (LAB – Great Sankey North) said that the hedge is one of many measures being proposed in the consultation and suggestions from the public included speed bumps.

“We are putting residents’ concerns at the forefront,” said Cllr Price.

“We won’t impose any changes to the village green, what we want to do is make sure that those that live around the green are part of the consultation.”

“We want to make sure that this is sorted as fast as possible. This is not the only solution.”

There have been several non-fatal crashes on the roads around Lingley Green over the last decade and residents are concerned about the speed and volume of cars in the area.

Christopher Bean, 72, walks from his home on the Halton estate along Pyecroft Road every morning to buy a newspaper and said: “Even crossing the road is a problem because of the number of cars that come racing down – there’s parents with young children trying to cross the road.”

He said a hedge would be an improvement but that it would not solve the problems.

“Assuming it slows the traffic up it will cause a backlog of traffic and make things worse for the local residents,” he said.

“It’s a short term measure – it’s going to take time for the hedge to get established and grow anyway. But I appreciate the fact that they are trying to do something.”

Great Sankey Council’s proposals to solve the problem will be put to Warrington Borough Council, who will be responsible for introducing any changes.

The consultation period ends on February 19 and people can have their say by emailing enquiries@gs-pc.net or calling 712279.
