A NEW drop-in centre for cancer sufferers has helped 235 people and won around £130,000 in benefits for patients during its first six months open to the public.

Patients have said that the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service is a ‘lifeline’.

The centre is based in the café at Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub and provides emotional support, advice on treatment, nutrition, employment issues and benefits.

Angela Anderson, manager of the service, said: “People often have a lot of questions when they are diagnosed, so this service is vital in helping them to keep control and obtain the answers they need at all stages of their cancer journey.”

The service is unique because a dedicated benefits advisor works exclusively with patients in Warrington, filling in the necessary paperwork and representing patients at tribunals.

At an event celebrating the hub’s work, Deputy Mayor of Warrington, Cllr Faisal Rashid, said: “This much needed service has clearly had a very positive impact on patients in Warrington and having it positioned right in the heart of the community makes it far more accessible to the people who need it most.”
