COUNCIL bosses say they are 'aware' of traffic problems in Birchwood and have made changes to light sequences around 'peak times' following lengthy queues on the M62 while roadworks take place.

Many motorists have described the work on Birchwood Way as 'dangerous' as cars have been queuing down the hard shoulder of the motorway before the Birchwood junction of the M62.

While others living in the area say a 10 minute journey now takes 30 to 40 minutes.

The £5.23 million project was tipped as being the answer to reducing congestion in the east of the town with temporary, four-way traffic signals in place for approximately five weeks and the A574 Birchwood Way reduced to a single lane on the approach to the Moss Gate roundabout to allow a 'safe working environment' for the workforce.

A council spokesman said: “These temporary lights are a crucial part of delivering the final scheme, which will result in a much-improved junction.

“We are fully aware of the issues drivers are experiencing and have already made changes to the lights sequencing around peak times.

“We will continue to monitor the situation on day-to-day basis and we apologise for any inconvenience.”
