WILMSLOW High School’s senior rugby union team are through to the Cheshire Cup Final.

They will face either Kings Macclesfield or Stockport in the decider, which will be played as the curtain-raiser to Sale Sharks' clash against French side Castres Olympique in the European Rugby Challenge Cup at the AJ Bell Stadium in Salford on Saturday, December 19.

Wilmslow booked their ticket to an exciting showdown courtesy of a 22-15 success St Ambrose in the semi finals.

Following their 24-17 win over Altrincham Grammar School in the last eight, Wilmslow were drawn away to St Ambrose and had reason to feel confident after running out convincing 49-15 winners earlier this season.

But this proved to be a much stiffer test.

Despite being played in difficult conditions, with a substantial cross wind, both teams coped well and played some enterprising rugby.

It was a hat-trick of tries from centre Luke James and one from captain George Koido Bunt that secured the triumph, but missed conversions meant that the result was in doubt right until the final whistle.

Luke is the younger brother of Sale Sharks player Sam James, who previously won the competition with Wilmslow High School.

Wilmslow are enjoying a strong campaign, as they are also going well in the NatWest National Schools Cup.

After beating Cheadle Hulme School 57-7 and Manchester Grammar School 33-10, they will meet the winners of Sandbach and Sir John Deanes College, Northwich, in the fourth round next week.

Wilmslow have never reached this particular final, though they did finish runners-up to Ermysteds Grammar School, Skipton, in the NatWest National Schools Vase in 2007.
