THE LEADER of Warrington Borough Council says there has been no progress on government promises to waive tolls for residents travelling over the new Mersey Gateway bridge.

Chancellor George Osbourne promised to scrap the fees in the run up to the general election, but Warrington Borough Council's attempts to clarify the funding and implementation of this have so far proved fruitless.

Cllr Terry O’ Neill raised the issue at Monday night’s full council meeting at the Town Hall.

He said: “As everyone knows we’ve supported building a Mersey Gateway bridge but expressed concerns on tolls.

“In the run up to the general election the government announced these would be free to residents of Warrington and insisted it had nothing to do with the general election and their target seats.

“I’ve written to the department of transport as we wanted full details on how this works and how it is financed.

“The department has been written to numerous times but despite this there’s been no indication on how this will be financed or when they can address these queries.

“The government need to give a statement about Warrington and as it stands we have no idea how it will be funded or implemented.

“I look forward to hearing how the government plans to fund it.”
