WARRINGTON South MP David Mowat is calling for a 'swift' construction of a new bridge across the River Mersey tipped to end the town's traffic nightmare.

Proposals for the £19.35 million Centre Park link scheme, which could be completed by 2018, will come before the executive board on Monday.

The 'preferred location' of the site will be from the junction of Chester Road and Gainsborough Road to the southern end of Centre Park.

Mr Mowat said he is 'delighted' plans are progressing and has no doubt the move will be welcomed by motorists.

"Having an alternative to Bridge Foot will certainly help alleviate some of Warrington's traffic problems," he added.

"I hope that the process will be completed as swiftly as possible."

Cllr Hans Mundry, executive member for highways, transportation and public realm, is also tipping the plans to deliver.

"This is an exciting and transformational scheme that will promote and support the council's ambitious growth framework, Warrington Means Business," he said.

"It will create jobs during construction, allow the building of new homes and the benefits that will bring and importantly help keep our traffic on the move."
