A LEADING sports journalist will pass on the tricks of the trade to the next generation of junior reporters after joining the media department of the University of Chester.

David Maddock, also known as the Daily Mirror’s football man in Merseyside, has joined the team at the university’s Padgate campus ahead of the new academic year.

He will continue working for the paper, but will spend his Mondays teaching on the university’s sports journalism programme.

David has worked at the Daily Mirror since 1999 and holds the position of chief Northern sports correspondent.

He said: “I’m really excited to be invited to work with the media department at the University of Chester and am grateful for the opportunity to join the flourishing sports journalism programme.

“I hope to be able in some small way to add to the reputation and success of an innovative course and enhance the learning experience of the students by passing on the knowledge of my 30 years within the industry."

Dr Alex Charles, head of media at the University of Chester, said: “It’s such a great pleasure having David on board out sports journalism team.

“David is not only a highly successful journalist but also a brilliant communicator – and of course he has the job that so many of our students want.”
