A TRANSGENDER Day of Remembrance will be held to honour transgender people who have been murdered or committed suicide due to prejudices.

The event will be attended by the Mayor of Warrington and is expected to attract visitors from as far afield as Yorkshire and Wales.

The evening, which this year focuses on transgender children and teens, will feature live music and guest speakers.

Michelle Winstanley, chair of Trans Warrington, said: “It’s a Transgender Day of Remembrance where as a group we remember transgender people around the world who’ve been murdered and committed suicide as a result of prejudice.

“We try to entertain, we have live music and readings and try to stick a little bit of education in there as well.

“It’s very important, it’s an international event – it’ll be held on or around that day all around the world.

“We’re just a small piece of the whole event and it’s very important because it honours those people and remembers them – they’re not going to be forgotten, people that are left will remember them.

The event is now in its fourth year in Warrington.

Michelle added: “This is our fourth year but it’s been running for a few years worldwide – it’s new in the UK but worldwide it started in America and grown.

“It’s taken time to get out to the rest of the world but I think most countries do it in the Western world.

“It’s a big event it’s not just open to transgender people, there’ll be a lot of other people there to support us.

“It was a great evening last year and it’s improved this year.

“This year we’re focussing on transgender kids.

“It’s a lot easier then what it was when I was that age, the world’s changed for the better in so many ways – but it’s not perfect.

“Lots still have problems in school – it’s a lot easier but just a small problem when your young is big, you’ve not got that experience of however many years.

“It’s entertaining and educational – it’ll make you think, laugh and cry.

“We do cram a lot into it, we’ve got various guest speakers on a range of topics.”

The event will take place at Orford Jubilee Hub on Thursday November 19 between 7pm-9.30pm – for more information email info@transwarrington.com.
