POLICE have praised an eagle-eyed lorry driver whose quick-thinking helped officers to catch a suspected burglar in the act.

The Morrisons truck driver, who has not been named, flagged down a passing police car after he noticed someone allegedly breaking into a property on Greenall's Avenue in Latchford on Saturday at 5.50pm.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of cannabis.

An investigation was launched and the suspect was arrested on suspicion of a fourth offence after he was linked to a break-in one hour earlier at a care home on Loushers Lane in Latchford.

He has since been charged with aggravated burglary, burglary, possession of an offensive weapon and possession of cannabis.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "We would like to thank the lorry driver for his help to enable us to apprehend the suspect quickly.

"We are very grateful."

Alan Hubbersty, of Grammar School Court, appeared at Chester Magistrates' Court on Monday to answer to the four charges.

The 39-year-old was remanded in custody and is set to appear at Chester Crown Court on September 14.
