PROUD parents watched on as youngsters got their hands dirty during the experience as zoo keeper for the day at Walton Hall and Gardens.

Ten children put on their gloves at the children's zoo to feed the goats, transport hay, clean the stables and lay down sawdust during the strenuous, but rewarding, 90-minute session.

Donkeys Lenny and Charlie enjoyed the company and were braying with pride throughout the glorious morning.

Reporter Aran Dhillon also got stuck in during the free session, which is put on five times a year by rangers Peter Cookson-Dean and Liz Rowlands.

Peter, who has been at the zoo for 34 years, was gleaming with pride after seeing the children adjust to the role and he hopes more will brave their fears to try the day out.

"It was great to see the children enjoying themselves and really getting stuck in," he said.

"Some do take longer to adjust but everyone seems to enjoy it and they carry out the duties we give them really well.

"It is just about building the confidence gradually – you can see them get more confident as the day progresses, which is really encouraging to see."

Children also laid out food for the donkeys but a 'special garlic sprinkle' was needed to ensure the animals were not bothered by any insects as a result of the garlic scent which comes to the surface of the skin.

"Watering and feeding both take around one hour to do – it is something the animals look forward to," added Peter.

"But I enjoy all aspects of the job, I have always wanted to work as a zoo keeper and it has been great since I have been here."

Peter admits the holidays have been a busy period but hopes parents across the town will take advantage of the opportunity provided for those aged five to 14.

"It is a free event so anyone can have a go, it is important that we give the opportunity to all children," he added.

"I think it is a great experience for them to have and they have fun at the same time too.

"Parents can give a bit of help too and watch their children so it is a nice family experience."

The zoo is open seven days a week, including at Christmas, so residents can pop along to see the animals being fed or to simply stroll the site.
