THIS week in Yester Years we take a look at Beamont School in Orford.

Reader George McKie sent in this picture from around 1960.

He said: “Whenever the Guardian has a mention of Beamont School it brings back memories from my childhood.

“The recent retirement of classroom assistant Helen Graham yet again brought back memories of the school.

“It was Beamont County Primary School back in the 50s and Helen was probably not born when I started there.

“We only had teachers then and I remember Mrs Watson, Mrs Taylor, Miss Kenwright and headmaster Mr Beswick to name just a few.

“We used to have our photographs taken every year individually and as a class. It was a great school with many happy memories.”

WEEK THAT WAS:

25 years ago: Resident John Starkey became the 89th person to receive a heart transplant at Warrington Hospital. This was following £10,000 worth of fundraising by himself and his friends at Crosfields Football Club for the hospital’s ‘New Heart New Start’ appeal.

100 years ago: Seven soldiers from the same family receive a letter of appreciation from the King.

Well-known Warrington footballer Sergeant Howard Davis was killed in action.
