A FATHER who was killed in an alleged hit-and-run in Warrington grew up in St Helens, his family said today as they paid tribute to a man who would go out of his way to help others.

Steve Donoghue, aged 58, died in a hit-and-run on Hallfields Road in the Orford district of Warrington in the early hours of Monday.

His son Wayne Donoghue, aged 36, described his father as an "outgoing man who would do anything for anyone".

Steve, who had five children and five adopted children, was living in Orford at the time of the crash.

He had previously held down a number of different jobs but enjoyed working as a mechanic.

Wayne along with his brothers and sister Steve Jnr, aged 27, Ian, aged 24, and Nicola, aged 22, remembered fondly seeing their dad, who grew up in St Helens, fixing his cars.

The family have since released a poem that was discovered in Steve's home following his sudden death.

Wayne added: "The poem obviously meant a lot to him as he was going to give it to his girlfriend and we thought it would be fitting to release it in his memory.”

The poem read: "As winds blow and snow falls

“Autumn beauty is laid bare

“If festivities do not cheer you,

“Just call we will be there

“There is warmth in friendship

“Hope from above

“So may peace and comfort

“Surround you and those who love you."

Investigations are ongoing into Steve's death after a 53-year-old man was arrested on Monday afternoon on suspicion of death by dangerous driving, failure to stop after an accident and failure to report an accident.

The suspect has since been bailed pending further investigations.
