THE town’s arts council admits it may have to explore ‘other avenues’ in its battle to bring a theatre to the town – but it will not reduce its commitment to the cause.

Warrington and District Arts Council (WADAC) wants to help deliver a theatre in the town centre as part of the £107 million Bridge Street development.

Long-standing WADAC member Cllr Celia Jordan has been hoping to persuade the council and cinema operator of the future 10-screen IMAX, which the Warrington Guardian understands will be Cineworld, to include a theatre at the venue.

But after receiving no support from either, Cllr Jordan, who is Stockton Heath Parish Council chairman, admits other options need to be explored.

“If we are to compete with the bigger cities, like Manchester and Liverpool, we need a theatre in Warrington,” she said.

“But I am not sure the people behind the cinema will want to build a theatre there so we have to look at some other potential avenues and possibilities open to us.

“We are looking at other possible venues - it is crucial that such a venue is in the town centre and has plenty of parking.

“We are also still hoping to get support and backing from high-profile figures so the campaign can gather more pace and we want anybody with any ideas to come forward.”

A sub-committee of the arts council will meet on August 11 to discuss the next steps of the campaign, as well as money, which is in a bank account from the previous bid to bring a theatre to the town in the last decade.
