A BOMB disposal squad was deployed to a car park in the town centre yesterday following a report of a suspicious-looking package.

Officers descended on the Market Multi-Storey Car Park on Academy Way on Tuesday after a concerned member of the public raised the alarm at 5.15pm.

The road was closed and nearby businesses and properties were on lockdown.

Paramedics were called to the scene as a precautionary measure.

But a spokesman for Cheshire Police has confirmed that the call turned out to be a false alarm and the roads were now reopened at around 9.30pm.

A controlled explosion was carried out at around 8.50pm by specialist officers.

The spokesman said: “All incidents of this nature are taken seriously but as today marked the 10th anniversary of the London bombings all forces have been on high alert.”

Cheshire Police will not be releasing information about what was contained inside the package.
