THE Peace Centre fell silent at 11.30pm today, Tuesday, to mark the 10th anniversary of the 7/7 London bombings.

For the past 10 years, the Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Foundation for Peace has worked with survivors of the terror attack, as well as the schools from Leeds where the bombers attended as pupils.

It has provided support and delivered projects such as the counter-extremism education venture Think.

As part of today's special memorial event, pupils from Priesthorpe School in Leeds and Burnage Academy for Boys in Manchester attended an anti-extremism workshop and discussion hosted as part of Think.

Through the project, the foundation works with young people to reduce their susceptibility to extremism, helping them to develop the skills needed to carefully consider the consequences of their actions.

Nick Taylor, chief executive of the foundation, said: "Since the devastating events 10 years ago, the Foundation for Peace has been working with schools and survivors and families of those who died, to develop projects to combat all forms of hateful extremism, which is why it was so important for us to host a special memorial event at the Peace Centre.

"The Foundation for Peace is committed to working to get young people at risk of radicalisation to 're-Think' the way they behave and encourage them to become responsive, rather than reactive.

"We are fully aware that violent extremist groups use prejudice and discrimination as a way to gain support.

"It's vital, therefore, that we make young people realise that there is another way so they can turn their back on extremism, and become positive leaders within their peer group and society as a whole."

The foundation is also offering advice and support to those affected by last month's terrorist attack in Tunisia.

The foundation manages the national survivors assistance network – a social health and welfare self-help membership network for people affected by terrorism.

It brings together those who share the same experience and trauma and provides a self-help forum.
