THE relaunch of Warrington Civic Society (WCS) is continuing to gain momentum following its latest meeting.

Members elected a new committee and debated a plan of action for the year ahead.

John Shipley, who has led this year's relaunch, became the organisation's new chairman and it was agreed that one area of focus should be on the town's conservation areas, many of which were described as being in 'poor condition'.

The first area to be looked at will be Church Street and how the group can engage with the community to bring about change.

At the meeting Susan Spibey, from Merseyside Civic Society, spoke of the successful 'place-making role' her group played and it was decided that WCS would join the regional civic organisation NWACTS and the UK wide Civic Voice.

This will allow the reformed group to work with, and learn from, other civic societies.

As part of its aims to promote the town's heritage, the society will be taking part in September's heritage open days and will be working with other groups such as the Friends of Warrington Transporter Bridge and the Friends of St Elphin's Park.

Members will next meet on July 28.
