MYSTERY surrounds a strange humming noise that plagued the south of Warrington during the early hours of the morning.

Many residents were woken by the sound which could be heard between the hours of 12am and 4am.

Shirley Andrews, of Clydesdale Road, Appleton, joked that the hum sounded like the noise spaceships make during blockbuster films.

She said: "At first I thought it was just me but I have seen lots of people posting about it on Facebook.

"It sounded like a hovering aircraft but the sound was constant and continued for hours and when I went outside there was nothing there."

"It sounded similar to the noise a spaceship makes when it is hovering."

Officers at Cheshire Police were unable to offer an explanation for the noise.

While a police helicopter was deployed to deal with an incident during the early hours of the morning, this would not have been responsible for the humming noise.

A spokesman for the council said it has not received any official reports about the noise but advised residents to call its contact centre on 443322 if the sound returns.
