ANGRY residents have complained a 'rat infestation' has not been dealt with quickly enough in the car park of the McDonald's on Winwick Road.

One reader said the problem was reported more than a week before any action was taken.

He added: "I would call it a rat infestation as they were running around everywhere in the car park but nothing was being done about it.

"It's disgusting as there's people eating there and children walking around."

A council spokesman said staff visited the site 'swiftly' after receiving reports of rats spotted outside.

He added: "We found evidence of them outside, but not inside the premises and have worked with the manager to identify some simple steps they can take to stop the problem and to agree an action plan with their pest control company.

"We believe there is no risk to the public."

McDonald’s has said 'cleanliness' and 'hygiene' are top priorities for the fast food chain.

A spokesman added: "We adhere to high standards with independent, strict and regular audits to ensure food safety.

"There is currently derelict land in close proximity to the restaurant and on occasions, pests have been sighted in the area.

"We continue to work closely with our contractors to monitor the area.

"We have increased litter patrols around the restaurant and requested regular inspections.

"The restaurant was visited this week by Environmental Health and we are working in conjunction with them."
