THE future of Warrington Transporter Bridge, now in its centenary year, remains unclear - but there is hope on the horizon.

The committee battling to save the grade two listed site from rotting away and collapsing into the River Mersey has confirmed a meeting with council officials is set to take place in the near future, although a date is yet to be confirmed.

Situated across the river, close to Bank Quay station, the bridge spans 200ft and reaches 76ft in height.

Appleton resident Margaret Ingham, aged 68, set up a Facebook page to save the site in 2013 and a website has been launched to keep those interested updated.

Save Warrington Transporter Bridge has now racked up an impressive 781 'likes'.

While the website, set up by committee member Rick Barker, will include latest news, photos, history and key contacts.

Earlier this year, the council's executive director for economic growth, regeneration and environment, Andy Farrall, admitted other issues will take precedence before the council can focus on saving the bridge but Margaret is hopeful of the future.

"The support on the Facebook page is still building and we are receiving messages from people all over the world but most of the people are from the UK," said Margaret.

"It is good that people realise the importance of saving the bridge and we are hoping the meeting with the council goes well.

"We hope the council will be able to help and now we are waiting for them."
