FIREFIGHTERS in the town joined forces with the medical profession for a training event to help keep residents safe.

BASICS North West, which is made up of experienced doctors from different fields of the medical profession, visited the fire Station on Winwick Road and carried out a training exercise scenario involving a road traffic collision with people trapped.

The group of around 15 people, including doctors, paramedics, medical students, GPs, North West Air Ambulance, A&E staff and firefighters, looked at better ways to work together during major incidents and got to look at some of the equipment other partner agencies use at incidents.

The BASIC group works for the Trauma Cell, part of North West Ambulance Service, and responds to trauma calls giving the medical teams more advanced knowledge and techniques.

Warrington watch manager Jonathan Hill co-ordinated the training event.

He said: “The point of this training exercise was to gain a better understanding of how we all work and to learn from each other about the various roles we play at incidents.

“As part of the exercise we got to see some of the equipment used by other partners agencies and then we worked to remove the roof of a car to highlight how this would aid the treatment and rescue of a casualty at road traffic collision.

“This was a very worthwhile exercise where everyone gained valuable experience in an area that may not be their expertise.”
