A DRIVER has been charged after a car ploughed into a police vehicle while trying to flee the scene.

Officers were carrying out stop checks at 1pm on Slutchers Lane in the town centre yesterday, Thursday, when a motorist allegedly drove into a police car twice.

The driver and the passenger of the car were arrested after they tried to escape on foot.

Both men were taken to the custody suite for questioning.

A 20-year-old man was charged with dangerous driving, no insurance and no licence.

He is expected to appear at Halton Magistrates' Court on June 17 to answer to the charges.

The passenger of the car was released without charge.
