ONE in five pet-loving homeowners in the area are spending hundreds of pounds to keep their dogs hot.

A survey found 21 per cent are spending approximately 20 per cent more on their heating bills in the north west every year to keep their pets warm while they are at work, according to research from heating expert’s Frontline Heating.

And one in three pet owners say that they will turn their heating up if the temperature seems too low for their pets. As well as heating, 27 per cent of north west homeowners are also spending more on their electricity bills, running the TV and radio for their pampered pets while at work.

Twelve per cent of north west pet owners also said their animal has a preference for watching reality TV, especially the X Factor and Britain's got Talent.

It is not just dogs and cats which cause owners to ramp up the thermostat however.

More than one in four owners of rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and even goldfish are keeping their heating on while they are at work.

Gary Chisnall, managing director of heating company Frontline Heating, said: “While I commend the love and care north west homeowners give to their pets, it is worth thinking about how leaving the heating on all day for pets will significantly increase your heating bills.

"The average north west heating bill is £748 a year.

"If you are committed to heating your home for your pet while you are out of the house, then it is worth considering other ways of saving money on your heating bills, such as ensuring your boiler is running efficiently.”
