THE council has spent £1250 to fix the 'out of sync' traffic lights around the Pink Eye roundabout - but residents are still unhappy about safety when crossing.

The site has been an area of concern for motorists due to the confusion caused by the traffic lights.

But the council insists the matter will no longer be an issue after work was completed to improve the system.

"The BT connection at the junction of Cromwell Avenue and Sankey Way has now been installed and is fully operational," said a council spokesman.

"The link from this junction to the traffic signals at the Pink Eye roundabout enables the council’s urban traffic control system to co-ordinate the signals so they can operate at their maximum efficiency."

But although motorists are likely to see an end to the problem, residents who use the crossings are continuing their pleas for further change.

In February, residents complained to the council over work on pedestrian crossings which appeared to have taken more than six months to complete - after being predicted to take eight weeks to finish.

One Sankey Bridges resident, Jim Corbett, who regularly uses the crossings, fears for the safety of the public if the crossing system is not changed.

"The traffic lights on the pelican crossings are confusing some people," he said.

"When you cross, at the crossing off Thewlis Street, the green man does not automatically come on when the lights are on red and we are used to it coming on automatically as it does at other lights where you don't have to push a button.

"I do not know why they can't do it here. Someone could get badly injured or something worse could happen - it is a problem for residents and some are frightened to cross, it is a shame.

"One of my neighbours had a near miss when she crossed - it shook her up."
