THE foreign secretary was in Warrington on Friday to visit the town’s only Sikh temple where he commended the efforts in place to keep youngsters engaged.

Philip Hammond joined Warrington South's Conservative candidate David Mowat at Warrington Guru Nanak Gurdwara, in Latchford, on Dover Road, in the week the temple celebrated Vaisakhi – the Sikh New Year.

During the religious service, during which all in attendance removed shoes and put on headscarves as a mark of respect, Mr Hammond was presented with a Siropa – a robe of honour.

Shortly after he discussed key issues with the community including the potential introduction of a Sikh regiment in the country, as well as investigations into the 1984 Sikh massacre.

But a matter he was keen to address after witnessing it first-hand was the impressive project in place to get children involved in activities.

Following fundraising efforts by volunteers, as well as grants from Cheshire Police and the council at the end of last year, the temple's after school classes and activity sessions have gathered pace.

"It is very important to keep the younger generation engaged like they are doing here," said Mr Hammond.

"We know what happens when we allow the younger generation to become disengaged – that is when the problem starts.

"I very much support the efforts by every community to keep people engaged and people together."

Mr Mowat, who has visited the place of worship several times in recent years, was also quick to highlight the connection between all followers at the temple, regardless of age.

"It has always struck me that the Sikh community is a highly successful community in Warrington and very integrated," he said.

"It is very strong and this temple is an example of that - it is a brilliant place to be, especially at this time of year during Vaisakhi.

"It is an opportunity for the foreign secretary to come here, partly to celebrate our relationship with India - it is a very positive thing.

"What has struck me is that the whole community – for example the grandfather, father and son are all together - it is a very strong thing in terms of keeping people together."
