THE inspiring efforts of volunteers during the First World War will be recollected following the launch of a community project this month.

Warrington Voluntary Action has created 'Warrington's War - Community Action from 1914-1918' to celebrate the social feats which took place in the town at the time.

The charity, along with volunteers, will be researching to see how members of the community supported each other and is going to design an exhibition which will showcase volunteering stories from the war.

The launch of the exhibition is planned for November 11 and will begin at the Gateway, on Sankey Street.

Stef Woof, deputy officer and co-ordinator of the project, said: "The project aims to engage volunteers and local agencies to find out more about community action and volunteering in Warrington during the First World War.

"Warrington’s archives have already revealed that there was a lot going on during the war, both to support local lads abroad, and to help those in need at home - there are even some charities that are still operating in Warrington today."

Attention now turns to attracting volunteers to help deliver the project and exhibition later this year.

"I am excited to recruit local volunteers and charities to get involved, as it is a great opportunity to reflect on what it means to give your time to support others, and to provide valuable services to local people," added Stef.

"It will be fascinating to discover the similarities and differences between then and now.

"The exhibition will be touring around Warrington to give local communities the opportunity to find out more about volunteering in Warrington 100 years ago - it may even inspire them to volunteer themselves.

"I hope that the final exhibition will show that volunteering has always been an important part of thriving communities, and that the volunteers involved will feel a connection with the past through social action."
