A ROW has erupted over plans to build a new scout hut in Hollins Green after the old one was destroyed by fire.

Homeless 22nd Warrington East Scout Group says the hut will be roughly the same size as before and provide facilities for more than 30 youngsters.

But landowners Rixton and Glazebrook Parish Council says residents are against it, fearing parking problems and late night noise.

"I don't know why they are against it," said Scout leader, David Taylor. "

It was completely destroyed by arsonists in August 2005 and is now a nice green field.

"We just want some more support. We've got the money, just not the permission to build it."

Mr Taylor says the group has had to meet at a nearby primary school, which has insufficient facilities to keep sports equipment or tents.

The 48-year-old says parking would not be a problem as most of the kids make their own way there' and only two of the leaders drive.

"I don't think there will be a future for the group if it carries on the way it is," he added.

Warrington Borough Council has given outline approval and planners have arranged a site visit.

However, Chairman of the parish council Maureen Banner says they are only representing the views of residents.

"We're not against building the scout hut, it's where they are placing it," she said.

"If they find another location we would support it.

"But most residents, especially those where the hut would back on to, are against it.

"Plus the land has village green status. There is absolutely nothing they can build there."

A decision is expected at Warrington Council's development control meeting on February 21.
