OFFICERS at Cheshire Police have issued a warning to residents about jewellery theft following a rise in burglaries.

Thieves have targeted homes in search of gold valuables and other items of jewellery.

While others have posed as tradesman or scrap metal merchants and have knocked on doors to see if anyone is at home.

They then return later in the day, usually when the homes are empty, break in and steal valuable jewellery from inside.

Detective Supt Andy Smith says, "We believe the thieves responsible for this sort of behaviour are extremely organised and are possibly travelling into the area from further afield to target residents.

"It is vital, therefore, that we all - police, partners and residents - work together to make life as difficult as possible for the criminals."

Detectives will continue to target those responsible and enquiries are ongoing.

Officers have urged all residents to be aware of the tactics used by criminals and to take steps to keep their valuables as safe as possible.

This includes making sure your jewellery is insured, keeping good records with photographs and always locking doors and windows.

Residents could also consider signing up to Operation Shield.

Those who sign up can have their property marked with a unique forensic liquid which links it with your home.

This means, if it is taken, police can return it to you when it is recovered.
