THE head teacher at Culcheth High has resigned for 'personal reasons' - less than one year after taking up the post.

David Terry, who has previously worked at Hope High School in Salford and The Sutton Academy in St Helens, has stepped down with immediate effect today, Friday.

Mr Terry, who was named as head teacher of the year in a secondary school at the Regional Teaching Awards in June 2009, only stepped up to the role in April.

A council spokesman has confirmed that the governors at the school have accepted Mr Terry’s resignation from the headship.

He said: "The governors wish to record their appreciation of Mr Terry’s work in his time as headteacher and wish him every success in the future.

“Mr Terry passes on his very best wishes to all staff, students, parents and carers for the continued success of the school in the future."

Ward councillors Chris Vobe and Matt Smith have issued a joint statement after hearing the news of Mr Terry’s resignation.

“We give our full support to Chris Hunt who will assume the role of acting head teacher.

“As local councillors we will continue to work closely with parents, the governing body and education officers at the council to ensure our high school remains one of the best in the town.”

Helen Jones, Warrington North MP, added: “It is very disappointing to hear of this resignation and I hope that the governors and local authority will now move very quickly to get a permanent head appointed so that the school can make progress.”
