RAISING awareness is key to helping those who are struggling with an eating disorder.

These are the views of Rachael Johnston from Great Sankey, who is on the road to recovery after breaking free from the grip of anorexia.

Speaking out during Eating Disorders Awareness Week, which runs until March 1, the former Great Sankey pupil, who struggled with anorexia as a teen, said making more people aware of the help out there is one way of reaching out to those who are suffering.

She said: "For me, raising awareness is importance as with the increase in eating disorders it's important people know where to go and what support is out there and people do care."

As part of the awareness week, the council is backing a campaign, which is led by the UK charity B-eat and supports people affected by eating disorders and raises awareness and understanding of the challenges and stereotypes.

The council’s public health team is keen to ensure that people know what health information and support is available locally and how to find it.

Cllr Pat Wright, executive board member for health, wellbeing and adult services, said: “Although eating disorders appear to be about food and weight, the reasons they occur are varied and complex.

“They aren’t just faddy eating, or diets gone wrong, they’re serious mental health problems.

"It’s really important that any residents that are struggling know where and how they can get help and support."
