CHESHIRE Police is continuing its investigations after a lorry carrying bricks demolished part of a bridge near Walton Hall and Gardens earlier this month.

The incident took place on February 16 at the bridge which crosses the Bridgewater Canal near the Walton Arms pub.

The police joined Warrington Borough Council on the site and diversions were put in place to assist motorists who were affected.

Investigations are ongoing but Cllr Paul Kennedy (Con - Hatton, Stretton and Walton) believes action of some sort must be taken to help prevent further incidents taking place.

"In the circumstances I would understand that the driver was struggling to get over the bridge for quite some time but there should be an element of common sense," he said.

"It is a big responsibility driving a HGV and people have to take responsibility for their actions as people could have been seriously injured.

"Even if it is more training for the driver, I think something needs to be done."

The councillor is currently working with the council to see what can be done to ease safety fears for motorists using the bridge in the future.

"I am trying to get access of the bridge reduced to stop things like this happening," he added.
