A WOMAN, who was inspired to go into teaching following the birth of her sister, has been crowned the Warrington Guardian's teacher of the month award.

Laura Bell, who teaches at Woolston Sixth Form College, spoke of her shock after she was surprised with the award during an assembly where she had been tricked into turning up under false pretences.

The 26-year-old from Orford said: "I thought it was to celebrate our one year anniversary.

"I can't believe it. It's lovely to get the recognition but that's not why I do it - I just enjoy the job."

Laura was inspired to go into teaching after providing invaluable support to her younger sister, Eve, now aged 11, who was born with additional needs.

Laura, who worked as a supply teacher before gaining the permanent post at the college which is based at the Woolston Learning Village, said: "Teaching is always something I wanted to do but helping with my sister made me realise that I wanted to work with people with additional needs.

"I think the parents appreciate that I understand the home side of things."

Laura was nominated by one of her students, Ben, and his mum Joanne Harris.

In her nomination for the award, Laura was described as working 'absolute wonders with the children helping pupils with life as well as learning skills'.

Joanne added: "She has bags of patience and a smiling outlook every day, even on days when things may not be going so well.

"All the teachers at the Learning Village are beyond fantastic but this teacher goes beyond the call of duty day after day."

Each month, the Warrington Guardian celebrates the hard work, dedication and achievements of one deserving teacher in the town.

The award, which is sponsored by education recruitment and training consultancy Academics Ltd, honours a teacher who has made a real difference to the school community.
