WARRINGTON Borough Council has ordered an 'illegal' conservatory at the King's Head pub be removed by the end of October following a long-running planning row.

Last week, the council's planning committee granted temporary planning permission for the large rear conservatory to remain in place.

However, permission was granted on the basis the extension is 'dismantled' by October 29, with the Grade II listed building 'reinstated to its former profile'.

A council spokesman said: "The building is not considered suitable as a permanent form of development.

"Any damage to the fabric of the building following demolition of the single storey rear extension and associated items attached to the original rear elevation shall be made good within 14 days of the removal of the extension, using matching materials and where available, original materials."

The council added replacement bricks must match the original brickwork in size and colour.

Andrew Fannon, who owns the pub on Winwick Street, said he remains hopeful a 'compromise' can be reached.

He said: "I'm quite happy with the decision as I'd asked for 12 months (for the conservatory to remain in place) but we got nine.

"It shows that we can work together.

"In the interim time we hope that we come up with a plan to move forward.

"(The conservatory) won't remain in place as it is now but it's given us time to come up with a new structure.

"We hope to discuss what I need to do to make it viable and placate the council with something reasonable."

The conservatory was erected without planning permission with the council warning in August it would take 'strong action'.

At the time, the Town Hall said it would 'protect the town's heritage against any unscrupulous or unauthorised development'.

A 'save our shed' campaign was launched on Facebook as the conservatory is popular with Warrington Wolves fans on match days.

Protestors signed an online petition to say the extension, which features patio furniture and a big screen, should remain in place.
