A REVIEW of security measures was ordered by education bosses at Glazebury Primary School after a child escaped from the grounds on Friday.

The pupil, whose parents have been informed, was able to break out of the school through an unlocked gate.

Investigations have since revealed that the child was able to run outside of the school perimeter due to a fault with the lock.

An investigation into exactly what happened has since taken place with a spokesman for the school adding that the safety of its pupils was of paramount importance.

“At the end of lunchtime a child ran out of the school grounds in front of two members of staff who followed the child, and who was never out of their sight.

"After a couple of minutes, the child was safely escorted back to school and the child’s parents were informed immediately by the head teacher.

"All the correct procedures were followed and as the child was never out of sight, there was no need to inform police."

It is understood the child was able to open the gate due to a broken latch which did not click securely in place.

The spokesman added: "This latch was not broken earlier in the day and was replaced immediately after the incident.

"The gate is always locked at break and lunchtimes when the children are on the playgrounds.”

But this is not the first time a child has escaped from the school on Warrington Road.

Around 18 months ago, a seven-year-old pupil was able to climb over the wall of the school but was returned to the ground immediately by a member of staff.

The mother of the child, who has asked to remain anonymous, said the incident was dealt with properly.

She said: "I have no issues with the school and they did everything that could at the time to make sure he was brought back safely."
