THE daughter of a decorated veteran has paid tribute to her brave father who died of a broken heart.

David Francis, of Chester Road, Lower Walton, had been happily married to his teenage sweetheart, Dorothy, for 58 years.

But 17 months ago, Dorothy, aged 76, died following a series of health problems.

David had been unable to come to terms with the death of his loving wife and, since then, has struggled with a number of heart conditions.

His daughter Julie Francis said: "My mum and dad were married for 58 years and they were inseparable from the day they met.

"He had never had any problems before so I honestly believe he died of a broken heart. He doted on my mum."

The 79-year-old died in intensive care at Warrington Hospital on January 5.

David was described as a 'loveable man' who cared about his family and friends.

He joined the army, aged 17, training at Catterick before working as a radio operator in The Royal Corps of Signals - following in his father's footsteps who also gave his services to the Royal Artillery.

During his time in the forces, he was stationed around the world and won five medals for his bravery.

His 23-year-old grandson, Luke, was also inspired by David's accomplishment and joined the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, aged 17, and is now a Lance Corporal.

Julie added: "He has always been a father figure to Luke - someone he could look up to."

David retired from the armed forces in his late 20s before working for Lancashire Police and for security firms.

The dad of four leaves behind six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The serviceman was honoured at his funeral on Monday at Walton Lea Crematorium.
