RUNNERS at the Warrington Victoria Park parkrun marked the event's one year milestone by putting on their running shoes.

Organiser Tony Carroll said he was 'blown away' by the hundred runners who turned up to the 55th event in the series on Saturday.

He said: "Just like the inaugural event, when 401 runners took part, it became clear that it was going to be another great turn out but as 9am approached I could still see a stream of cars arriving.

"I didn’t want anyone to miss out on the celebratory run so I asked our special guest Ted Finnegan, Warrington’s Mayor, to delay the start by 5 minutes.”

Cllr Finnegan said: It’s great to see so many future Olympians lining up here today, I will be looking out for you on my TV set during the next games in Rio.”

Mat Rushbrook crossed the finish line first with a time of 17 minutes 17 seconds after taking to the 5km course.

The Deputy Mayor of Warrington, Cllr Geoff Settle, who completed his 12th parkrun, said: “It is a fantastic event - where else would you get a free 5km run every Saturday morning? Some people even bring their dogs whilst others bring their babies in push chairs.”
