BURGLARIES are down in Warrington, flaunting a seasonal trend for break-ins to increase in the run up to Christmas.

According to Cheshire Police figures, burglaries across the county were down by 26 per cent in November, compared to last year.

In Warrington, burglaries were down in the town centre, and the east, south and west regions of the town.

However, burglaries were up slightly in the central area, which includes Orford and Bewsey.

There were 18 break-ins last month, compared to 14 in November, 2013.

Overall, there were 60 burglaries across the town, compared to 66 the year before.

Police say this suggests homeowners are taking heed of security advice.

Sup Int Martin Cleworth said: "It is great to see that the people of Cheshire have really taken the messages onboard and are making life difficult for criminals in our area.

"The advice we have been giving out is simple security advice, the key is to get people to think about it so that they will act.

"A 26 per cent drop in burglaries is impressive, but more importantly that figure means there are 79 less families or individuals having to deal with the distress and upset that comes with being burgled.

"I would encourage everyone to keep up the good work and continue to ensure that your home and valuables are as secure as they can be."

Despite the reduction, police are urging residents to make sure doors and windows are locked, and to keep valuables out of sight.

The use of timed security lights are also recommended.

Christmas shopping and piles of presents can mean thieves are on the look out for easy targets, police added.
