CAMPAIGNERS say they fear dumping at Arpley tip will continue after it was confirmed landfill will carry on until at least 2017.

Warrington Borough Council's planning committee approved proposals for dumping to continue for another three years on Thursday.

Approval was given in line with a planning inspectorate decision over an appeal by 3C Waste Ltd, against the council's refusal of a 12 year extension.

Residents and officials who have protested against landfill at Arpley hope it will mean the site will be restored by 2018.

They said the council's decision could prove the 'best option', if it means FCC is barred from making any further applications for an extension.

Norman Crompton, of Snowbury Crescent, has helped lead the campaign against landfill at Arpley.

He said: "The main point we want emblazoned is that the council's barrister makes it extremely clear to FCC's barrister they don't put another application in.

"That is the worry - they stick another application in."

An appeal by FCC against the council's decision to turn down a five year extension is due to be heard in February next year.

Mr Crompton added: "In the worst case scenario, if they win the five year appeal, we'd want in the terms and conditions they would never have anything else granted.

"The primary focus is saying 'no' to the appeal.

"It's important that people attend that appeal."

Nick Bent, Labour's Warrington South parliamentary candidate, said: "It is some time before Arpley becomes a haven of peace and quiet.

We need to get the dumping stopped as soon as possible and this solution allows this.

FCC have been a terrible neighbour, so irresponsible and dishonest.

"This solution has to be legally water tight.

"If it is, it is the best solution.”

Speaking at the Town Hall meeting last week, Cllr Steve Parish (Bewsey and Whitecross - LAB), said: "In terms of accepting what's on offer, do we have a choice?

"I think we should be grateful the decision (by the planning inspectorate) is the harm can't go on for longer."

Cllr Pat Wright (Bewsey and Whitecross - LAB) said: "It's a great pity we are sat here again talking about Arpley.

"This is how FCC has lead residents a merry dance for many years."
